Dr. Jorge Angás is a permanent ARAID researcher in the Area of Archaeology at the University of Zaragoza, affiliated with the research group P3A and IPH. His scientific work focuses on the analysis and implementation of multiscale and multitemporal geospatial data in the field of archaeological heritage, using advanced geomatics techniques.
He has developed an international academic career through research stays in Uzbekistan, the UAE, France, and Italy, as well as national stays at the UPM and USAL. His scientific output includes 70 publications: 15 articles in Q1 journals, 2 in Q2 journals, 23 book chapters, and 4 monographs, in addition to 71 conference presentations, 40 of which were by invitation. He is currently the PI of three major competitive projects: “Digital Twins for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage: Management, Monitoring and Interpretation of Geospatial Data (DiGHER)”, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MCIU/AEI) and the European Union; the European project “Digital Cultural Heritage Twins Connections (HerOn)”, funded by UNITA GEEI; and the project PID2024-157190NB-C22 “Ceramic Production and Consumption Centers in Central Asia: Connecting Satellite Archaeology to Fieldwork”.
His scientific contribution also extends to regional projects (SEFORA, Forau de la Tuta), national projects (CERAC, GAPS and Sites), and European projects (Handpas, FirstArt). In 2019, he published the open-access monograph “Geometric Documentation of Cultural Heritage: Analysis of Techniques, Case Studies and New Perspectives”.
His social impact is reflected in technological development and knowledge transfer to public and private entities. He has managed more than 80 knowledge-transfer contracts (11 since 2023 through OTRI UNIZAR) with institutions such as the Ministère de la Culture – DRAC Occitanie, the National Museum of Altamira, the University of Barcelona, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and private companies. He was co-founder of the spin-off Scanner Patrimonio e Industria (2007–2025) and has developed know-how transfer agreements with OTRI UNIZAR, as well as obtaining two intellectual property titles jointly with the UGR and UPM.
In 2023, he received a scientific outreach award for the use of digital twins at the archaeological site of Forau de la Tuta at the Premios Tercer Milenio. He has contributed extensively to the training of early-career researchers at undergraduate and master’s levels (2019–2025), supervising 12 Bachelor’s theses (TFG), 5 Master’s theses (TFM), and two doctoral dissertations at the University of Zaragoza, funded by the Government of Aragon and the MSCA programme. He has supervised 4,210 hours of national and international university internships (2014–2024) and has participated in teaching innovation projects (USAL, 2018; UNIZAR, 2022–2024).
He serves as a reviewer for journals such as Computer Applications in Archaeology, Digital Applications in Archaeology, and the Journal of Cultural Heritage, among others. He has directed courses and seminars at the Teruel Summer University (2013) and the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) in 2022 and 2023. He is a member of the National Scientific Committee on Rock Art (CCNAR–ICOMOS) and an advisor to the National Archaeology Plan of the Spanish Institute of Cultural Heritage (IPCE). He is also the coordinator of the Seminar on Geomatics Applied to Archaeology and Heritage (SeGAP) at the University of Zaragoza.
