Professor of Physiology in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Zaragoza; with 5 consecutive six-year periods of research and 6 five-year periods of teaching. Member of the ALIPAT Reference Research Group (Research Group: Effect of technological food processing on digestive and allergic pathologies; Ref: A20_23R).
Graduate and PhD in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Zaragoza. Between 1992 and 1999 he carried out postdoctoral stays in INSERM units, with Drs. E. Brot-Laroche (U-178), F. Russo-Marie (U-332) and J.P. Mauger (U-442) (Paris, France), and with Prof. G. Semenza (ETH-Zurich, Switzerland). In 1999 he returned to Zaragoza with a contract for the Incorporation of Doctors and Technologists from the MEC. In 2000 he moved to the Cardenal Herrera-CEU University in Valencia, as a Associate Professor of Physiology for 4 years. In October 2003 he obtains a position in the Physiology Unit of the Veterinary Faculty of Zaragoza, first as Assistant Professor (2003-2005), then as Contracted Professor Doctor (2005-2008) and Asociate Professor (2008-2017). Accredited in 2010, he obtains in 2017 the position of Professor of Physiology.
Research carried out on intestinal pathophysiology: study of the function, expression and regulation of enzymes and enterocyte proteins (glucose transporters GLUT5 and GLUT8, intestinal lactase and IP3 receptors). In recent years, his research activity has focused on the intestinal serotonergic system, analyzing the expression, function and regulation of the serotonin transporter (SERT), establishing its interrelation with the intestinal innate immune system, the microbiota and inflammatory processes.
He has published 74 articles (70 indexed and 4 non-indexed); 2 books and 2 book chapters. He has presented 143 communications to national (55) and international (88) congresses. He has directed 10 doctoral theses, 2 with international mention. He has participated in national and regional research projects, being PI in 12 of them. “Ángel Herrera” Award (2001) for research in Experimental Sciences. Head of the "Gastrointestinal Physiopathology" Research Group (2014-2016).
Secretary Professor of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (2009-2011) and Deputy Director of the AgriFood Institute of Aragon (IA2) (2015). Currently, Secretary of the Academic Committee (since 2013) and of the Quality Assessment Committee (since 2017) of the Doctoral Program in Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences. Member of the University Senate and the Board of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zaragoza.
