Graduated in Chemistry from the University of Zaragoza in 1985. PhD in Chemistry from the University of Zaragoza in 1989. Graduated in Economics from the National Distance Education University (UNED) in 1997. In 1989 he obtained a position of Associate Professor in the Inorganic Chemistry Department of the University of Zaragoza. After completing a postdoctoral stay at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Prof. Dr. J. M. Brown (1990-1991), he returned to the University of Zaragoza where he develops his teaching and research activity, as Lecturer since 1995 and as a full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry since 2010.
His main research interest focuses on coordination and organometallic chemistry, and homogeneous catalysis. He has participated in the development of research projects financed in competitive calls of national or regional character since 1996, and since 2006 as principal investigator. He is coordinator of the research group Homogeneous Catalysis for Organometallic Compounds (E42_20R) since 2017. He has co-authored 6 PhD Thesis and more than 20 Degree and Master Thesis. He is co-author of more than 130 scientific papers in international journals of high impact, some of which have been referenced in scientific reviews and book chapters, related to: i) the design of polydentate ligands for the controlled synthesis polynuclear transition metal complexes, ii) synthesis, reactivity and catalytic activity of early-late transition metal sulfido clusters, iii) the design of metalloligands for application in supramolecular chemistry, iv) development of organometallic systems based on functionalized phosphine and NHC ligands with hemilabile character, as well as polydentate ligands, for catalytic applications. These include: C-H activation and functionalization of hydrocarbon bonds, hydrogenation and transfer hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds, hydrofunctionalization of unsaturated substrates (hydroamination, hydrosilylation, hydrothiolation) and alkyne polymerization reactions. Recently, we have developed different strategies for the immobilization of homogeneous catalysts for the preparation of supported catalysts in inorganic solids and carbonaceous materials with application in several of the above mentioned processes. The research activity is complemented with the participation in numerous conferences and scientific meetings.
He has carried out an intense activity in the training of predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers, and as a tutor of foreign doctoral students within the project “Integral Training and Research in homogeneous catalysis by organometallic compounds”, funded by the European Union, and in the “Iberoamerican Program of Science and Technology for the Development” (CYTED) through the Ibero-American Network of Homogeneous Catalysis. He is co-autor of the textbook: Química (Editorial Santillana, 1997, ISBN: 84-294-4904-3). He was former Secretary of the University Institute for Homogeneous Catalysis Research (IUCH) (2004-2012), and Deputy Director of the Research Institute of Chemical Synthesis and Homogeneous Catalysis (ISQCH) (2012-2021). He is coordinator of the University Master's Degree in Molecular Chemistry and Homogeneous Catalysis of the University of Zaragoza (QMyCH) since its implementation in the 2014-15 academic year.
