Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Technologies at the University of Zaragoza and member of the Thermochemical Processes Group. My research activities focus on key concepts for the ecological transition, such as Biorefineries, Zero Waste, Circular Economy, and Decarbonization. My professional career began in 1996 in the field of pyrolysis and gasification of lignocellulosic biomass and black liquors, the main waste from the pulp and paper industry, for energy production. From 1999 to 2001, I worked in the R&D department at Dow Chemical Company in Tarragona. In 2001, I returned to the University of Zaragoza, where I have developed my research activity (four six-year research periods), mainly focused on the thermochemical treatment of residues with high ash and nitrogen content, such as animal by-products, sewage sludge, and manure, to obtain value-added products, including ammonia, phosphorus recovery, low-cost solid adsorbents, and soil amendments. More recently, my research activities include the valorization of municipal solid waste and textile waste through thermochemical processes.

Part of my research has been carried out in collaboration with several companies such as SAICA, SARGA, Grasas Mariano Díez, Litera Meat S.L., HTN Biogas, Industrias QUímicas del Ebro, URBASER, CADAGUA and Carburos Metálicos. I have participated in 30 national research projects, as Principal Investigator in 6 of them (1.4 M€), and 11 industry contracts (1 M€), as PI in 3. As a result of my research activities, I have co-supervised 4 PhD theses and co-authored 47 JCR articles (almost all ranked in Q1, h-index: 26), as well as nearly 80 scientific conference contributions, mostly at international conferences. I have maintained international collaborations with institutions such as the Institute of Paper Science and Technology (USA), Washington State University (USA), Federal University of Sergipe (Brazil), Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (France), Amazonic Regional University (Ecuador), and Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico).

Furthermore, I have been an evaluator for the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI) since 2013 across various programs (Postdoctoral Training Program of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (2013); Evaluation Panels for National Plan research projects in the areas of Chemical Science and Technology and Energy (2015, 2017, 2021); Evaluation Panel for Predoctoral Contracts (2018, 2021); Torres Quevedo Program (2017, 2018). and Ramón y Cajal Program (2020)). I have also conducted over 40 evaluations for the National Evaluation Agency, and since February 2025,  I have been a permanent collaborator for the Energy and Transport Area in the AEI. In addition to my official teaching duties, I have supervised more than 50 undergraduate and Master’s theses and served as Secretary of the Department from 2016 to 2024.
