In February of 1989 I started my professional career at the company Cables de Comunicaciones in Zaragoza (Spain). In October of that year I had the dissertation of my final project and I obtained the Telecommunications Engineering degree from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. During the second year at Cables de Comunicaciones, I was appointed Head of the Optical Sensor Area. In the course of the following years, an important work of research and development of an optical sensor based on surface plasmon resonance was carried out. This work received funding from the Center for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) and research grants together with renowned research groups from the University of Zaragoza and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
In October 1993, I joined the University of Zaragoza as a full-time Associate Professor. I began my teaching work on various courses of the last years of the degree in Telecommunication Engineering: Engineering Projects, Optical Communications Laboratory, Optical Transmission Devices and Systems and Optical Communications. In 1994 I started my research activity in the area of plastic optical fibers and I met Professor Joseba Zubia with whom I started a fruitful collaboration until today. On the other hand, I started my doctoral thesis in the field of signal processing in biomedical applications and specifically in the processing of heart rate variability directed by the Professor Pablo Laguna. In February of 2000 I had my PhD dissertation and obtained the degree of Doctor of Engineering from the University of Zaragoza. On March 8, 2003, I obtained my position as tenured Associate Professor and I started teaching post-graduate courses included in the Communications Technologies and Networks PhD program and later in the ICT in mobile networks Master.
In 2012 I was coordinator of the Signal Theory and Communications area, within the Department of Electronics and Communications. In April 2013, I was elected Director of the Department of Electronic Engineering and Communications, a position I currently hold.
Currently, my research focuses on the study and application of plastic optical fibers, participating in a continuous way in research projects together with the University of the Basque Country and the Carlos III University. In 2010, a new collaboration was started with the City University of New York and the Boeing Company in order to study the application of plastic optical fiber in aircrafts.
At this moment, I have four research six-year terms and four five-year periods recognized for teaching merits.
Recently, since May 2018, I am the Dean of the Territorial Demarcation of Telecommunications Engineers in Aragón.
