Elías Cueto es catedrático de mecánica de medios continuos y teoría de estructuras desde Enero de 2010. Ingeniero industrial por la Universidad de Oviedo (1997) y doctor ingeniero industrial por la Universidad de Zaragoza (2001), ha sido profesor asociado en la Universidad de Oviedo (1998-2000) y profesor en la U. de Zaragoza desde entonces.
Sus líneas de investigación incluyen el desarrollo de métodos numéricos de simulación en el ámbito de la mecánica de medios continuos, habiendo realizado aportaciones en el desarrollo de métodos sin malla, métodos de reducción de modelos y, más recientemente, la realidad virtual y aumentada, la mecánica basada en datos o la inteligencia artificial, entre otros campos.
Su investigación ha sido galardonada con el Premio Juan C. Simó de la Sociedad Española de Métodos Numéricos en Ingeniería (2005), el scientific prize de la European Scientific Association of Material Forming (ESAFORM) en 2006, el premio de la Fundación CETIM (2007), y el premio O. C. Zienkiewicz de la European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) en 2012.
Actualmente es presidente de la Sociedad Española de Mecánica e Ingeniería Computacionales (SEMNI), miembro del Board of Directors de la European Scientific Association of Material Forming de 2008 a 2020 y miembro de la General Assembly de la European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS).
En 2020 fue nombrado "fellow" de la European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering & Science, EAMBES y en 2022 de la International Association of Computational Mechanics, IACM.
Actualmente es profesor invitado del centro CNRS@CREATE en Singapur (centro mixto del CNRS francés y de la National University of Singapore).
