Dr. Andrés Miguel Cosialls Ubach has developed a well-established academic career in the field of Law, with a particular focus on defense studies, national security, and International Humanitarian Law. He holds a PhD in Law from the University of Lleida and has been awarded three recognized research evaluation periods (sexenios de investigación), reflecting sustained high-quality scholarly output. He is accredited by the Spanish National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) as Full Professor (Profesor Titular de Universidad), Associate Professor (Profesor Contratado Doctor), and Assistant Professor (Profesor Ayudante Doctor), and by AQU Catalunya as Associate Professor (Profesor Agregado).
His research activity is structured around two complementary axes: on the one hand, Agricultural Law and the legal organization of rural areas; and, on the other, the legal-institutional analysis of defense and security, with particular attention to the role of the State in contexts of crisis, conflict, and strategic transformation.
In the field of defense, he has developed a distinct research line focused on the legal architecture of National Defense, defense diplomacy, intelligence, cyber defense, and the protection of critical infrastructures, as well as on the application of International Humanitarian Law to contemporary armed conflicts. His work addresses key issues such as the protection of civilians, the regulation of military operations, urban warfare, cyberattacks, and the safeguarding of objects indispensable to human survival, combining a legal perspective with a strategic and operational approach.
Among his main contributions is the editorship of the collective volume Armed Conflicts and International Protection in the Sahel: Legal, Operational and Humanitarian Challenges (Atelier, 2025), as well as the publication of monographs such as Ifni. From the Treaty of Wad-Ras to its Occupation (Spanish Ministry of Defense, 2016), which contribute to the analysis of the State’s external projection and the legal-military framework. He has also produced an extensive body of scholarly work in specialized academic journals, both in Agricultural Law and in defense and security studies, covering topics such as critical infrastructure protection, conduct of hostilities, intelligence, cybersecurity, and the evolution of the Common Agricultural Policy.
His research activity is complemented by the preparation of reports and legal opinions for public institutions, particularly in matters related to the Ministry of Defense and the agri-food sector. He also serves as Associate Professor at the University Center for Defense Studies – Spanish General Military Academy, where he contributes to the legal education of military officers. This is further complemented by his experience as a substitute judge and practicing lawyer, which provides a practical and applied dimension to his academic profile.
Among other merits, he has held academic coordination roles in postgraduate programs and has received several institutional distinctions, including the Cross of Military Merit (White Distinction), the “Armas y Cuerpos” Research Award, and the “Commander Ezquerro” Teaching Award.
