Agustín Ariño is Professor of Food Science & Food Safety in the University of Zaragoza (Spain) since 2010. He followed the academic career from Research fellow (1986-1989), Assistant Professor (1989-1995) and Lecturer (1995-2010). Dr. Ariño received his B.S. and Ph.D. in Veterinary Sciences (majoring in chemical contaminants in foods) from the University of Zaragoza. After graduation, he spent one year in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (USA), carrying out postdoctoral research on molds and mycotoxins. Since 2012 Dr. Ariño is the research leader of the reference Group Analysis and Evaluation of Food Safety (AESA), designing research projects to support the risk assessment process for chemical and biological hazards in the food chain. In addition, Dr. Ariño belongs to the MICOFOOD National Network of Excellence, which is dedicated to the different aspects of the risk assessment for molds and mycotoxins in food and feed. Dr. Ariño is a member of the AgriFood Institute of Aragon (IA2).

Throughout his scientific career, he has worked in the following lines of research:
(1) Assessment of chemical risks in the food chain: mycotoxins, chlorinated contaminants, residues of phytosanitary and veterinary products, risk prevention and reduction strategies in the food chain, detection and control techniques.
(2) Evaluation of biological risks in the food chain: pathogenic microorganisms (Listeria, Salmonella, etc.), antibiotic resistance, prevention and elimination strategies for pathogenic micro-organisms (‘One Health’ approach).

In the role of principal researcher, Dr. Ariño's group has obtained funding from several competitive projects (National R+D Program, European Union, Regional grants), as well as from several research contracts with companies for the technological transfer to the productive sector. Dr. Ariño’s experience in food quality and safety includes working with regulators and food industry and providing expert advice on technical matters, such as research needs and emerging issues. He has mentored many graduate students, hosted and trained visiting scientists from within and outside Spain, and supervised 11 Ph.D. theses.

Dr. Ariño has authored or co-authored more than 80 SCI-JCR papers (>50% in first quartile Q1), as well as 12 international book chapters. The current h-index is 30. He has been awarded the 5 CNEAI six-years research periods that he has applied for (period 1990-2019), the last one granted in 2020. In summary, Dr. Ariño has been dedicated to the study of contaminants in the food chain, the advanced analytical techniques for detection and the procedures for their prevention and reduction. He has experience in the use of various analytical techniques, especially chromatographic, which have been applied in the field of food science and food safety, obtaining relevant results disseminated in international journals of high impact, as well as in national and international Congresses.

Regarding university management, Dr. Ariño has served as Secretary of Department, Vice-Dean and Member in various commissions and expert teams (ANEP, ANECA, WHO, EAEVE, Erasmus...). Recently, he has been member of the Scientific Committee of the 1st International Workshop of the Spanish Network MICOFOOD & MycoTWIN Workshop 5 -6 (Valencia, 2023). Dr. Ariño has a close working relationship with some international research groups and he is currently a substitute member of EFSA's emerging risks network EREN.
