Silvia Murillo Ornat is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Arts of the Universidad de Zaragoza since 2008. She graduated in English Philology in 1994 and obtained a competitive national scholarship for her doctoral studies at this University. Her thesis, which obtained a Doctorate Extraordinary Award, was a contrastive study of English and Spanish reformulation markers in a comparable corpus of journalistic texts, attending to several pragmatic aspects of the meaning and use of these discourse markers. She currently teaches several courses in the Degree of English Studies, including Contrastive linguistics applied to translation, Translation of specialised texts, Pragmatics of communication, and English grammar. She has been invited to lecture at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (in the Máster Universitario Oficial en Lengua Española: Investigación y Prácticas Profesionales, 2018, 2019), at the University of Heidelberg (Lecture cycle Spanisch in der Welt. Aktuelle Fragen der Spanischen Sprach- und Übersetzungwissenschaft, 2018), and at the University of Coimbra (10º Colóquio MarDisT, 2024). She has also supervised 25 final degree dissertations and 21 master dissertations.
Her publications have received 595 citations so far and she has an h-index of 13 (Database: Google Scholar Citations); she has written three first-quartile papers (Journal of Pragmatics, 2004; International Journal of Corpus Linguistics, 2012; Discourse, Context & Media) and two second-quartile publications (Languages in Contrast, 2016; Sendebar, 2017, as coauthor) (Database: Scimago). She has obtained three positively evaluated 6-year research periods (the last one 2023-2028).
For the past 10 years she has conducted research in the field of Pragmalinguistics, focusing on the contrastive study of discourse markers (English-Spanish), English for Academic Purposes, English as a Lingua Franca, and digital discourse analysis. She has taken part in projects in English Studies (Universidad de Zaragoza, PID2021-122303NB-I00; FFI2017-84205; FFI2012-37346), and in Spanish Studies (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, FFI2013-41323). She has formed part of the group InterLae and then of the group CIRES (H16_20R), both recognized as consolidated research groups by the Gobierno de Aragón. She is also a member of the Institute on Employment, Digital Society and Sustainability (IEDIS). She has presented her research in international conferences, and the references of the papers she has published can be found on her ORCID account (https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1369-3590).
She has been coeditor of the journal Miscelánea. A Journal of English and American Studies (ICDS 10.0 since 2016, Miar database) for four years (2018-2021). During this time she edited Volumes 57, 59, 61 (Language and Linguistics), and coedited 63 and 64 (Language and Linguistics, and Literature, Film and Cultural Studies). She is currently -and was previously- a member of the editorial board of the journal (2011-2017/ 2022-). She has also acted as a reviewer for several national and international journals, among them Language Sciences (Elsevier, 2009), Folia Linguistica (Mouton de Gruyter, 2012), and English for Specific Purposes (Elsevier, 2019, 2021).
Finally, her teaching of academic English courses for Engineering Ph.D. candidates at the Doctoral School of the University of Zaragoza (since 2014) can be highlighted as a research transfer activity.
