The applicant started his scientific career at the Institute of Materials Science in Seville (joint centre University of Seville-CSIC) funded by an FPU fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Education. His research during the PhD aimed at combining plasma chemistry and conventional catalysts to obtain synergetic effects in the remediation of diesel exhaust gases from mobile sources. After obtaining his PhD in Chemistry, he was involved in several R+D collaboration projects with Abengoa and Repsol related with the use of plasma-catalysis for upgrading refinery wastes and green energy production.

The candidate did a postdoctoral stay as CIBER-BBN researcher at the U. C. Madrid (UCM). After being awarded with a postdoctoral fellowship by Fundacion A. M. Escudero in November 2008, he conducted a 25 month stay in the D. Chem. Eng. (U.Texas at Austin (USA) where he gained experience on the synthesis and functionalization of nanoparticles and liposomes with potential application in biotechnology and catalysis. He returned to Spain holding a “Juan de la Cierva” Junior Grant at the Institute of Nanoscience of Aragon in the University of Zaragoza. He was also awarded with a Marie Curie Reintegration Grant (CIG) by the European Commission under the FP7-People Program for the research of low-cost luminescent materials (2011-2014). Current research activities are related with the design of efficient nano-catalysts susceptible to microwave, laser and/or light activation as well as the development of novel reactor configurations activated by electromagnetic radiation. This research has been  intended for the optimization of remediation processes (wastewater, volatile organic compounds), the energetically-efficient attainment of high throughput chemicals such as alkenes and epoxides and the development of novel full-spectrum activated photocatalysts.

As a result of the above mentioned research activities, the applicant has co-authored 102 peer-reviewed publications including 89 SCI-papers (+4 under review), 8 conference papers and 5 book chapters. He has also filed 1 patent and 1 know-how transfer agreement. These works have received more than 2600 citations and are associated to an h-index = 31/34. He has participated in more than 160 contributions to conferences and workshops, being invited as speaker in 7 occasions. He has also been involved in 19 research projects, including nationals (6), internationals (6) and collaborative with the industry (7), being principal co-investigator in 4 of them. He has co-directed 3 PhD Thesis, 13 Master Projects (+1 ongoing)  and 5 Graduate Projects (+2). He also mentored 2 foreign predoctoral short-stay projects and 5 internship research projects. He has been invited as Guest Editor of 3 Special Issues for the journal “Catalysts” and "Photochem" (MPDI), is board member of "Catalyst", "Photochem" and "ACS Sustain. Chem & Engineering" and has been an organizer member of the 1st international conference based on “Unconventional Catalysis and Reactors”. In addition, he has acquired more than 600 hours of teaching experience and received positive assessments by ANECA as Contratado Doctor and the Research Certificate I3 by the Spanish Agency of Research.
