Dr José A. Casajús is Professor of Physical Activity and Health at the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad de Zaragoza (Spain). After obtaining his MD (1982) and his PhD (1992) from the same University, he specialised in Sports Medicine at the Universidad de Barcelona.
He worked as a sports physician at the Medical Centre of Sports Medicine of the Government of Aragon (Spain) from 1990 to 2000. Since 2000 to 2020 Dr Casajús was the Head of Medical Support for the Spanish football referees of the Royal Federation of Spanish Football (RFEF). He was also Doping Control Officer for the European Union Football Association (UEFA). Since 2004, Dr Casajús is President of the Research Network in Physical Exercise and Health (EXERNET) and of the “Exercise is Medicine-Spain” initiative, from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Since 2015 he is the Director of Genud-Lab (Exercise and Body Composition Laboratory, GENUD group). He is the coordinator of the exercise area within the GENUD research group (B34_17R: GROWTH, EXERCISE, NUTRITION AND DEVELOPMENT).
Dr Casajus has published 240 papers in journals indexed in JCR-Pubmed (113 in the last 5 years), being 60% of papers published in the 1st or 2nd quartile, and cited 3264 times in the Web of Science (WOS). The most cited paper published in 2012 has already got the outstanding number of 212 citations in WOS. His h-index is 38. Dr Casajus has supervised 16 PhD theses, and is currently supervising 6 PhD Theses.
He has participated in 48 research projects, 5 of them international projects. Dr Casajus is the Principal Investigator of four I+D+I RETOS projects (calls 2005-2009-2013-2017).
His research interests and expertise include: Interactions between exercise and physical activity in healthy an unhealthy populations. Application of exercise and physical activity for the prevention and treatment of a variety of disorders (e.g. obesity, cardiovascular risk, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue syndrome among others). Sport-medical support for athletes. Wearebles in Health and Performance.
