Dr. Ignacio Ochoa holds dual Bachelor's degrees in Biology (1999) and Biochemistry (2003) from the University of Navarra. In 2004, he earned his Ph.D. from the same institution, specifically within the Department of Histology and Pathology. Following this, he joined the Structures and Materials Modeling Group (GEMM) at the University of Zaragoza as a postdoctoral researcher, during which time he established the group's experimental bio-laboratory. His postdoctoral research, primarily conducted as a researcher at CIBER BBN, centred on investigating the mechanical properties of biological tissues and the effects of mechanical stimuli on cellular behaviour. These studies spanned multiple scales, including macrometric applications relevant to tissue engineering and micrometric applications related to microfluidics and Organ on Chip technologies.
In 2015, Dr. Ochoa was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Anatomy and Human Histology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR), where he currently holds the position of Associate Professor in Histology. He leads the Tissue Microenvironment Lab (TME Lab) at both the I3A and IIS Aragón. He has also coordinated one of the six strategic programs at IIS Aragón, specifically focusing on Technologies and Innovation Applied to Health. Furthermore, Dr. Ochoa is an active member of Group 069 within the CIBER BBN. In March 2023, he was appointed Scientific Director of the Joint Scientific-Technical Services of IACS-UNIZAR and Director of the Biomedical Division of the SAI at UNIZAR.
Dr. Ochoa has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact international journals and contributed four chapters to academic books. He is frequently invited to speak at national and international conferences. In the realm of technology transfer, Dr. Ochoa holds two knowledge transfer agreements and is the inventor of more than ten patents, three of which are licensed. He is also a co-founder of two spin-off companies, EBERS and BEONCHIP. EBERS specializes in the development and commercialization of bioreactors and extracorporeal organ preservation systems, while BEONCHIP focuses on designing and commercializing microfluidic devices for Organ on Chip applications.
