Gloria Cuenca-Bescos UNIZAR: specialist in fossil and extant small mammals, field excavations and field guiding; classification of microvertebrates using classical paleontological techniques, geometric morphometrics, CT scan techniques and 2D, 3D reconstruction, ancient DNA. Member of the research Group E18_23R: Aragosaurus: Recursos geológicos y Paleoambientes of the Gobierno de Aragón and of the University Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences of Aragon (IUCA) of Zaragoza University.
She graduated in Geology from Zaragoza University in 1981 and obtained her doctorate from the same University in 1987. Since then, she developed her research in the University of Zaragoza with short stays in the Universities of Groningen, Netherlands, one year; Praha, Czech Republic, one year; New Mexico, USA, six months; Weimar, Germany, one month.
Cuenca-Bescos is an expert in teaching Paleontology of Vertebrates, Paleoecology and Conservation Paleobiology at the  Department of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Sciences, University of Zaragoza. Cuenca-Bescos has five-year teaching periods and six-year research periods. Awards: Prince of Asturias 1997; Scientific Research 1997 Castilla y León; Royal Academy of Sciences of Zaragoza 1997; Aragonia 2012; Cortes de Aragón Medal 2018. Between the years 2017-2021 she was the leader of the Instituto Universitario de Ciencias Ambientales de Aragón IUCA. Between the years 2021-2025, she has been Vice Chancellor of Technological Transfer and Innovation of the University Council and she is currently again in her teaching and researching post. From 1991 to 2023 leader of the microvertebrate fauna research from the Pleistocene to Holocene  localities of Atapuerca, Burgos, Spain, The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 2000, under the name, Archaeological Site of Atapuerca. She has  published 276 scientific articles (https://orcid.org/my-orcid?orcid=0000-0001-5125-9651); 159 Web of Science, with a WOS H-index 38, https://www.webofscience.com/wos/woscc/summary/ad967503-1268-438a-86d1-6ae3cad79dce-4ae0b3fa/relevance/1); Cuenca-Bescos has also written 11 books and given more than 100 popular science conferences.
Member of the editorial board of two scientific journals, Gloria regularly collaborates as a referee for articles in international journals and have participated in project evaluation committees in Spain and other countries.Also she is engaged with citizen science and has created the first Geology and Society Chair of University-Enterprise in Spain.
Her main lines of research are microvertebrates, especially mammals. The analysis of these are the basis of phylogenetic, evolutionary, paleoecological, taphonomic, and biostratigraphic studies. Along with other members of the Aragosaurus team, Cuenca-Bescos is applying innovations in paleontological studies such as ancient DNA, geometric morphometrics, and with the help of microtechnology, the three-dimensional reconstruction of the skeleton of extinct mammals, and microorganisms classification with AI tools. Cuenca-Bescos is starting a line of research and teaching in the Paleobiology of conservation. Cuenca-Bescos has directed 14 doctoral PhD theses, and fifteen master's thesis on microvertebrates Cenozoic and Mesozoic.
