He is currently a university professor in the Departament of Psychogoly and Sociology and has held various management positions, including Vice Dean of Students at the Faculty of Education from 2009 to 2013 and Coordinator of the Master's Degree in Lifelong Learning in Multicultural Contexts from 2010 to 2014. From 2018 to 2020, he was the co-director of the "United States Foreign Trade Institute Chair of Advanced Intelligence" at the University of Zaragoza, and from July 2014 to June 2024, he was the director of the Department of Psychology and Sociology at the University of Zaragoza.
His research career lies at the intersection of psychology, education, and technology. He is particularly interested in applying artificial intelligence (AI) tools to improve learning, emotional well-being, and educational inclusion. He has received four research evaluation periods (three for research and one for transfer) and has directed or co-directed 21 doctoral theses. From 2017 to 2023, he was the Principal Investigator of the Educaviva - Education and Psychological Processes group, recognized by the Government of Aragon. In this group, he led research on socioemotional competencies in digital environments.
He has participated in and led Collective Intelligence projects, serving as the principal investigator of four projects based on the Collective Learning tool (Thinkhub). Two of these projects are currently underway: TED2021-130302B-C21: "Digital Transformation and Critical Thinking in Students Through Online Interaction on the THINKUB Collective Intelligence Platform" (12/01/2022 - 05/31/2025) and CONVIVEN-CI-IA “Learning of socioemotional competencies for cybercoexistence for cybercoexistence through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) + collective intelligence (CI) tools in educational centers” (2024–2026) is funded by the Government of Aragon and the Edelvives Foundation. Its objective is to promote school cyber coexistence by developing socioemotional competencies through AI- and collective intelligence-based tools.
For these interdisciplinary projects, he collaborated with researchers from the Institute of Biocomputation and Physics of Complex Systems (BIFI). The objective of this collaboration is to study the behavior of people interacting in a digital environment designed under the Collective Intelligence paradigm and analyze the possibilities it offers. They have promoted the conceptual and empirical development of new possibilities in terms of learning, groupings, and elements of face-to-face versus digital environments, among others. The latest line of work aims to develop interaction between people and robots, a promising area of research involving interdisciplinary collaboration across various fields.
