I am currently Associate professor in the Department of Psychology and Sociology at the University of Zaragoza. I obtained my PhD in Sociology from the Autonomous University of Madrid and completed a master's degree at the University of Chicago and the Center for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences at the Juan March Institute in Madrid. I have worked at three universities, a public research organization, a consortium between public administrations and universities, the Spanish government, and the Congress of Deputies.

In 1999, I received a scholarship from the La Caixa Foundation to study for my PhD at the University of Chicago. I worked (part-time) for over a year at the Survey Lab, an applied research laboratory. In the United States, I also worked as a university assistant and researcher.

After returning to Spain in 2005, I carried out several activities simultaneously. My main activity was at the Institute for Children and the Urban World in Barcelona, an applied research center (consortium of universities and local administrations). I was IP of half a dozen research projects. At the same time, I taught in an American university program abroad (IES Abroad) and as Adjunt Professor  at the University of Barcelona.

In 2010, I obtained a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute of Politics and Public Goods of the CSIC in Madrid, where I developed several research projects in  the Social Policy and Welfare State (POSEB) group. Since 2012, I have been a professor at the University of Zaragoza.  Between 2018 and 2023, I suspended my teaching activities after being appointed High Commissioner for the Fight against Child Poverty. One year later, I was elected member of the Spanish Congress of Deputies for the Zaragoza constituency in the  13th and 14th legislatures. For more than three years, I served as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, which took me to various parts of the world as head of parliamentary delegations. In June 2023, I resumed my teaching and research activities at the University of Zaragoza.

I am the author or co-author of fourteen books and almost a hundred academic articles and chapters in collective works on the sociology of the family, education, child poverty, inequality, and social policy. Throughout my academic career, I have spent time at various universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Brazil. I have been IP of a reasearch proyect within the frame of the National R&D Plan and have participated in various additonal projects and contracts. I am currently co-IP of a second project within the frame of the National R&D Plan.

Since November 2025, I sm Chairman of the Aragonese Sociology Association.
