I am a Juan de la Cierva granted postdoctoral researcher at the Graphics and Imaging Lab of the University of Zaragoza. I have developed my research in the field of material appearance, more specifically in the measurement of those reflectance and transmittance distribution functions that characterize the appearance of an object. During my MSc degree, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Optical Radiation Measurements Group (GIMRO) from the Institute of Optics of the Spanish National Research Council (IO-CSIC), thanks to a JAE-Intro ICUs fellowship. During this time, I developed a primary facility for measuring the Bidirectional Scattering-Surface Reflectance Distribution Function (BSSRDF), which is the physical quantity directly related to the visual attribute of translucency, with traceability to the International System of Units. This facility has served as the inspiration for other laboratories that have subsequently developed traceable BSSRDF measuring systems. This work entailed the first step to develop a PhD thesis in the same group based on the development of the first measurement scale for the BSSRDF in the visible range, which concluded in the obtention of my PhD with Cum Laude and International Mention.
I have published 8 original research papers in academic journals (three of them as a first author), most of them in Q1 or Q2 journals and one in a D1 journal, and I have presented my research in 12 different conferences (7 international). I am also a reviewer of 5 different academic journals. During my PhD, I worked for three months at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), the national metrology institute in Germany, as a guest researcher. There, I collaborated in the study of the characterization of the bidirectional transmittance of volume-diffusers. The results of this study were published in a special issue of the academic journal Metrologia and presented in two international coferences. Besides, they entailed the inclusion of a more sophisticated study on the measurement of the transmittance of samples with strong lateral scattering in the protocol of the Joint Research European Project "Multidimensional optical diffusion for the measurement of appearance (xDDiff-23IND14)", wich was funded with 2.3M €. In February 2024 I visited the Inria centre at the University of Bordeaux in France for two weeks to collaborate in BSSRDF measurements and data analysis.
Regarding outreach activities, I have been part of the Governing Board of the CSIC PhD Network association (2023-2024) and a member of the IOPTICA Student Chapter (2022-2024). As such, I have been involved in the organizing committee of the IMOS 2022 conference and 4 local seminars. I have also participated in experimental demonstrations of Optics in highschools and in workshops for PhD students. Besides, I have published two popular science articles in the online journal of the Spanish National Metrology Institute.
My teaching activity includes a formative course of Optics for lighthouse professional operators and a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) held by the Politechnic University of Madrid. |
