Juan Pablo Martínez is a Catedrático de Universidad (Full Professor) at the University of Zaragoza (UZ). He has a solid experience in biomedical signal processing and interpretation, the field where he obtained his PhD. His main interests are in the development of signal biomarkers for diagnosis, risk stratification and monitoring of cardiovascular diseases and other abnormal heart conditions, both using non-invasive and invasive bioelectrical signals. He has done long-term visits post-doctoral at the University of Lund (7 months), where he has collaborated in signal processing applied to intra-dialysis monitoring research and several short-term visits.

He maintains active collaborations with national and international institutions, such as the Univ. of Lund, Politecnico di Milano, Univ. of Porto, Univ. de Buenos Aires, Univ. Pompeu Fabra, Univ., Rey Juan Carlos and hospitals, such as Hospital Clínico Lozano-Blesa de Zaragoza, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Hôpital Erasme de Bruxelles, Erasme MC Rotterdam, Massachussets General Hospital, Lund University Hospital, among others.

He has participated as Principal Investigator (PI) or Collaborator in a large number of international, European, national and regional research projects. In particular, he has been PI of three three-year projects funded by the National Plan for R&D in the 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2022 calls. He has and is actively participating in 3 projects led by the European Space Agency and on 2 MSC ITN/DN actions. Since 2014, he has been the PI of the Biomedical Signal Processing and Computational Simulation Group (BSICoS), acknowledged as a Reference Group by Aragon’s Government. BSICoS group is also part of the CIBER in Biomedicine, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine and the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Aragón. He has participated in more than 45 other projects and contracts, with broad international collaborations.

He has authored/co-authored more than 210 publications, including 67 full papers in peer-reviewed international journals and 150 conference papers published in proceedings. Two thirds of his journal papers are journals in the top third of JCR ranking. He regularly delivers invited talks in scientific conferences and symposiums, is reviewer for more than 20 JCR journals and currently member of the Editorial Board of Computational and Mathematical Methods in Medicine (Hindawi). He has supervised 5 PhD students (one jointly with Politecnico di Milano, Italy) and is currently supervising 4 other PhD. He has additionally supervised 26 Master Theses and 16 Graduate Theses.

In parallel to his research activity, he has been lecturing at undergraduate and postgraduate level at UZ as a Teaching Assistant (Profesor Asociado 2000-2007), Lecturer (Profesor Colaborador, 2007-2008), Senior Lecturer (Profesor Contratado Doctor, 2008-2009) and Associate Professor (Profesor Titular, 2009-today). Since 2010 to 2014, he has been the Coordinator of the Master’s Degree Program on Biomedical Engineering, at UZ. He is currently the Coordinator of the PhD Degree Program on Biomedical Engineering, also at UZ.
