JOSÉ CASANOVA GASCÓN holds a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Lérida and a PhD from the University of Zaragoza. He has been developing teaching and research functions in the Department of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Environment (Plant Production area) of the E.P.S. of Huesca, University of Zaragoza since 1992, first as Full Professor of University School and since 2002 as Full Professor of University. He has two sexenios CNEAI.
He is an expert in viticulture, olive growing and fruit growing, his research lines are focused on: (1) recovery of local and minority grapevine and olive varieties; (2) sustainable viticulture, with special emphasis on the use of disease resistant/tolerant varieties; (3) new 2D or SHD (super high density) production systems in fruit trees; (4) effect of natural extracts on wood diseases in grapevine.
In relation to the subject matter and the geographical environment in which the applicant's Doctoral Thesis is planned to be carried out, she has 32 indexed publications since 2011, two monographs entitled 'Characterization of grapevine varieties (Vitis vinifera L.) in the province of Huesca' and 'The soils of the vineyards of the Somontano Designation of Origin', and a book chapter entitled 'Ecological viticulture in dry land' ('Agricultura ecológica en secano'. Mundi-Prensa).
During the last 10 years he has carried out research and recovery of olive tree varieties in Aragón. He has carried out the characterization of olive varieties in the province of Huesca and the olive groves of the D.O of oil. Since 2018, he has been collaborating with the UN in South Lebanon, participating in the "Almazara program" that trains farmers in modern olive growing techniques.
Regarding research and transfer projects related to viticulture, he has been responsible/participated in projects for the identification of the terroir of Murero (Sommos Garnacha Winery); characterization by molecular markers of M.V. of vines in the province of Huesca; prospecting and characterization of vine varieties in the regions of Ribagorza and Monegros (DPH); study of the vineyards of Secastilla (Viñas del Vero); characterization of minority vine varieties (CVA); distribution and characteristics of the Parraleta variety (DPH); study of the native varieties of the Somontano D.O. and of the A.O.C. Cotes du Frontonnais (DGA); etc. On oenology, he has directed the project Typicity and traceability of the wines of the D.O. Somontano and the A.O.C. Cahors: integration in the territory and has participated in the modification of the specifications of DOP Campo de Borja.
In the area of organic production and valorization of natural products, he has participated in activities for the consolidation of the agri-food circuit of organic products in the region of Huesca (UAGA) and has been PI of a project to obtain, optimize and evaluate the antioxidant active principles of plants in the Pyrenees (CTPP6/12).
His research work has been accompanied by dissemination tasks, being responsible for courses for the training of advisors in organic agriculture for the DGA and courses for farmers on cultivation of medicinal plants and has directed several courses on viticulture (UIMP and EPS Huesca); cherry (EPS Huesca); almond and pistachio (DGA and EPS Huesca).
