Academic Background and Career
Industrial Engineer (specializing in Electricity) from the University of Zaragoza (1990) and PhD in Industrial Engineering in Energy Optimization (1996). I have been a tenured Associate Professor since 2000 in the field of Thermal Machines and Engines (Department of Mechanical Engineering). I hold 6 recognized teaching merit periods (tramos docentes) and 4 recognized research merit periods (sexenios), the most recent covering the 2017-2022 period.
Teaching Activity and Doctoral Supervision
I have primarily taught courses in Heat Transfer, Thermal Engineering, Energy Technology, Biomass Energy, and Solar Thermal Energy. I have supervised 3 doctoral theses linked to competitive research projects, including one under co-tutelle with the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST, China).
Research Lines and Outcomes
My research has focused on operation and optimization models for pulverized coal plants, biomass grinding and drying, concentrated solar power (CSP) plants, thermochemical processes, and industrial energy efficiency.
Two active leadership roles stand out:
Coal Grinding Systems: Characterization of grinding systems and their influence on combustion performance in pulverized coal boilers.
Biomass Grinding: A natural evolution of the previous line toward renewable solid fuels.
Both lines resulted in significant research projects and high-impact international doctoral theses, directly yielding 10 articles indexed in Q1 journals.
International Collaboration: The ICARE Project
Between 2011 and 2025, I collaborated with the China-EU Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy (ICARE), located at HUST in Wuhan (China), and coordinated by Mines-Paristech. I played a key role in the institute’s launch, coordinating the Biomass specialty of the CARE Master’s program and leading the faculty team from the University of Zaragoza. This stage is notable for international university management and applied educational innovation. It also produced research results, including participation in a joint project on solar thermal plants, the co-supervision of a doctoral thesis, and the publication of four articles in indexed journals, all directly related to my work during stays in China.
University Management and Program Coordination
I have held several significant administrative leadership positions:
Secretary of the Centro Politécnico Superior (now EINA) for 5 years.
Secretary of the CIRCE Joint Research Institute (now Energaia) for 8 years.
Coordinator of the PhD Program in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (2005–2011), obtaining both the "Mention of Quality" and the "Mention of Excellence."
First Coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Renewable Energy at the University of Zaragoza (2011–2014), a pioneering program in Spain.
