My research work reflects two main stages of my scientific and academic career: the first stage (1996-2005) as Associate Professor at the Institute of Physics of the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) includes my research and teaching activities over five years. At IF-USP I have been responsible for the creation and management of the mechanochemical laboratory in the Department of Materials Physics (DFMT). In the experimental magnetism group of the LMM (Laboratorio de Materiais Magneticos) I have directed master's, scientific initiation and postdoctoral students. My current collaboration with these former students is reflected in the collaborations that are still maintained today in their academic institutions, a collaborative relationship that I consider a personal success in terms of human resource training.
The second stage (2005-present) began with my incorporation of the Institute of Nanoscience of Aragón (INA). Here I have dedicated mainly to the development and consolidation of a new line of research on Nanomagnetism and biomedical applications of Magnetic nanoparticles (NPMs) mainly for magnetic hyperthermia. The achievements in this period include new methods of synthesis of NPMs with size control and magnetic properties, in biocompatible colloids for magnetic hyperthermia. In addition, I have implemented the INA cell culture laboratory, a general-purpose laboratory for the study of biological model models and their interaction with NPMs.
In terms of technological achievements, I have designed, developed and built equipment for measuring power absorption in magnetic colloids and cell cultures. This is a pioneering system with many technological improvements designed to make a fully automatic measurement. The innovation of these activities formed the basis of a spin-off company of the University of Zaragoza, of which I am a co-founder and scientific advisor. My work has established an internationally recognized research group in biomedical applications of magnetic nanoparticles, composed of engineers, biologists, chemists and physicists.
Recognized as one of the 100,000 “top-scientists” (63,564th) of all areas in the Stanford University Ranking (PLOS Biology 2019, 17, e3000384 ; DOI: 10.1371/journal.pbio.3000384), Top 10 in the ranking of UZ.
