Graduate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Zaragoza (UZ) in 1993, specialising in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Health, and European Doctor in 2015, with a thesis on equine laparoscopic surgery awarded sobresaliente cum laude. He holds the OCV Certificate in Equine Practice, obtained in 2019 and reaccredited in 2025.
He is currently Associate Professor of Equine Medicine and Surgery in the Department of Animal Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UZ. He was previously Part-Time Adjunct Lecturer in Medicine and Animal Surgery from 2001 to 2024. He coordinates the Equine Integration course and contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching in equine practice, surgery, anaesthesiology, imaging, hospital teaching and final degree projects.
His professional career is linked to equine medicine and surgery. After clinical and research stays in equine centres in France and Italy, he worked as an equine practitioner and co-founding partner of Veterinarios Especialistas en Équidos, SL from 1995 to 2004. Since 2005 he has carried out clinical activity at the Veterinary Hospital of UZ, first as equine clinician and senior surgeon and, since 2025, as a clinical academic. He was Deputy Director of the Large Animal Area from 2010 to 2016.
His research activity is mainly integrated in the consolidated research group LAGENBIO. His main lines are regenerative medicine of the equine musculoskeletal system, immunogenicity and immunomodulation of mesenchymal stem cells, minimally invasive equine surgery and hospital-based clinical research. Since 2006 he has participated in the equine mesenchymal stem cell line and, since 2008, has promoted minimally invasive equine surgery. He is a member of IA2 and IIS Aragón.
He has participated in more than 35 research projects and contracts, acting as principal investigator or researcher in charge in 10 contracts with companies, foundations and certification bodies. His scientific output includes more than 45 journal articles, more than 235 congress and meeting communications, coordination of one book, book chapters and professional transfer publications. He has three CNEAI research six-year periods and an H-index of 15.
He has supervised or co-supervised five doctoral theses, six master's theses and more than thirty final degree or equivalent projects. He is accredited for the use of animals for scientific purposes, including teaching, in all species, under Order ECC/566/2015.
In knowledge transfer and innovation, he has participated in contracts for certification of R&D&I projects and in projects on medical implants, equine surgery, regenerative medicine and biomedical animal models. He has contributed to industrial and intellectual property results, including the Cellequs know-how, a bank of equine mesenchymal stem cells for allogeneic therapy, and the patent application “Smart device design for horse hoof monitoring”.
In university and professional management, he has been an elected member of the Faculty Board of Veterinary Medicine since 2008 and of the Governing Council of UZ in 2012-2016 and since 2025. He directed the UZ Own Master’s Degree in Equine Clinical Practice (2009-2016). He has served on the Executive Board of AVEE and is currently its president. He coordinates the working group for the interuniversity postgraduate programme for the OCV Certificate in Equine Practice.
