Two main research lines have been developed: Sustainability and Energy Efficiency in Building and Cooperation for Sustainable Development.
The scientific output includes 19 JCR-indexed articles, 14 of them published in first quartile (Q1) journals. The author has an h-index of 13 in Scopus with 564 citations, while Google Scholar reports 814 citations and an h-index of 14. ResearchGate metrics show over 5,500 reads, 630 citations, a Research Interest Score of 331.0, and an h-index of 14. The researcher has actively contributed to knowledge dissemination through 26 presentations at national and international conferences, including five invited talks, as well as 15 invited technical lectures. In addition, they serve as evaluator for several JCR journals and for ANEP research projects. In terms of research training, one international PhD thesis (defended in 2017) has been supervised, awarded the extraordinary doctoral prize and resulting in 5 Q1 publications. Furthermore, 7 Master’s theses have been directed.
Within the first research line, the researcher has participated in 5 publicly funded projects, 9 competitive research projects, and 9 R&D projects with private companies, acting as Principal Investigator (PI) in 7 of them. Currently, they lead the research group Energy Sustainability in Defence Installations (SEID) and also a member of the Thermal Engineering and Energy Systems Group at the Aragon Engineering Research Institute (I3A).
Relevant international research stays have been carried out at the Gabriel de Castilla Scientific Base in Antarctica, the Miguel de Cervantes Military Base in Lebanon, and the University of Oviedo. I was the P.I. for the CUD on the European Commission LIFE project (LIFE 19CCM/ES/001327), focused on Zero Energy habitable mobile modules in Europe. In this project, six work packages coordinated by CUD are led by the researcher. The outcomes have been presented in high-level forums, including the 5th Consultation Forum SEDSS of the European Defence Agency (2022) and the Descarbonising Antarctica Discussion Forum (Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, 2024). An international patent is currently under application in collaboration with Bhaus Arquitectura Eficiente, with exploitation rights already committed to the company ARPA. The Spanish Polar Committee has also committed to deploying the prototype at the Gabriel de Castilla Scientific Base.
Recognition includes the Technological Innovation Award at the Gala de la Edificación en Aragón (2021), the national Energy Globe World Award (2024), where the project was also ranked among the top five worldwide, and an accesit in the sustainable and healthy building category (2023).
Regarding the second research line, a research stay in Angola combined academic work with development cooperation, contributing to the construction of an orphanage for children with disabilities using improved earth-based construction techniques. The researcher has been a member of the Advisory Council of the Chair of Cooperation for Development at the University of Zaragoza since 2008. In 2016, they co-chaired the III International Congress of Development Studies and delivered its inaugural lecture. Since 2023, they serve as co-director of the Iberoamerican Journal of Development Studies and have been part of its Editorial Committee since 2010. Additionally, they are a board member of the Spanish Network of Development Studies
